Binance: spot vs futures

On TapeRadar you can watch spot and futures side by side. Understanding the difference between these markets is essential: the same buying sweep can mean different things when it comes from leverage or the “real” purchase of the asset.

What is spot

In spot you buy or sell the asset for cash. If you buy 0.01 BTC, that BTC becomes yours (in exchange custody). There is no forced liquidation due to leverage. The main risk is that the price falls after your purchase.

What is futures (perpetual)

In perpetual futures you trade contracts with leverage. You can profit from a rise or a fall, but the exchange can liquidate the position if the margin runs out. The funding rate encourages contract price to be close to spot.

How the tape behaves in each

Spot

Large spot buys may indicate accumulation and large sells may indicate distribution. Even so, a whale can transfer assets to another wallet or trade OTC without appearing on the public tape in the same way.

Futures

In perpetual futures, a sell sweep can be a hedge, a leveraged short or the liquidation of longs. Futures CVD is useful for spotting urgency, but it can mislead you if you interpret everything as “real money entering the asset”.

Cross reading (tape gold)

When futures move upwards and spot confirms with purchases, the movement usually has more “body”. When only the futures skyrocket and the spot is dead, the rally can be short covering or weak leverage. Use TapeRadar to compare the two worlds in the same pair.

Which one to choose to start

  1. Beginner: only spot, liquid pairs (BTC, ETH).
  2. Intermediate: read spot + futures on the tape without trading futures yet.
  3. Advanced: futures with low leverage, defined risk per trade and error log.

High leverage does not make you a professional trader. It just multiplies the size of the error.
